Correspondence, essays, financial papers, and printed materials, chiefly relating to Phillips's activities as historian and collector, with some materials concerning his civic and political activities; together with his stamp collection and mss. collections (comprised of individual documents or groups of materials concerning significant individuals in American and British history, including American presidents, signers of Declaration of Independence, British statesmen, admiralty, American writers and scholars, and historical information pertaining to the history of Hawaii and eastern Massachusetts). Includes material concerning Phillips's duties as Salem City Council member, and Massachusetts state representative, honorary curatorship of Pacific ethnology at Peabody Museum of Salem (1926), and his presidency of Essex Institute (1936) and bibliographies of his library of rare books on Hawaiian history.
